Savage Canyon Landfill: the Whittier dump

Savage Canyon Landfill is open to residents and businesses located in the City of Whittier. It is not a regional dump: unincorporated Whittier and the surrounding cities may not use it, so a Hacienda Heights or La Habra address does not qualify.

Bring a valid California ID or two recent utility bills as proof of residency. The city also requires a valid driver's license to enter, with every load covered. Some common junk is not accepted there at all: appliances, mattresses, box springs, green waste, tires and electronic waste all need another route.

Puente Hills: the landfill is closed

Plenty of people still search for the Puente Hills dump, but the Puente Hills Landfill closed permanently on October 31, 2013 after 56 years. What runs on the site now is the Puente Hills Materials Recovery Facility, which pulls recoverable material such as food and green waste out of the waste stream. It is reached through the old landfill entrance on Crossroads Parkway South.

On the Orange County side: Olinda Alpha

Olinda Alpha Landfill is run by OC Waste & Recycling and accepts public and commercial solid waste, but not hazardous waste.

Paint, chemicals and electronics

None of the landfills are the place for hazardous products. In Whittier, hazardous waste cannot go in the garbage and goes to county drop-off events instead. Across LA County those drive-through collection events take household hazardous waste and e-waste, and Orange County runs four collection centers that take e-waste too.

Or let Louie haul it

If the trip to the dump is more than you want to deal with, Louie carries it out of the house and hauls it off on a truck and a 6 x 12 x 4 hydraulic dump trailer. Anything usable goes to a local donation center first.

Jobs start at $120. Mattresses, appliances and old TVs are all fine with him. See what a junk removal job costs or the full list of what Louie takes.
